Corten steel is popular in garden design thanks to its rugged appearance and long lifespan. The characteristic rust layer gives elements like corten steel planters and corten steel mailboxes a warm, natural look. But when this material is used on patios or paving, unexpected issues may arise: rust stains on the tiles. In this blog, you’ll discover why this happens, how to prevent it, and how to solve it — with practical tips and sustainable solutions.
Corten steel (also called ‘weathering steel’) is a metal alloy that forms a dense rust layer due to its chemical composition. This layer protects the underlying metal from further corrosion. Unlike regular steel, it doesn't rust through but creates a slowing barrier. Perfect for outdoor applications, it requires little to no maintenance and visually fits a natural garden setting.
The protective rust layer of corten steel forms gradually. In the first weeks or months, the material sheds rainwater containing rust particles (iron oxide). These run off the surface and may end up on the paving below. Especially porous materials like concrete, natural stone, and light-colored ceramic tiles are prone to absorbing these rust traces. The result? Stubborn orange-brown stains on your beautiful terrace.
Fortunately, a few precautions can greatly reduce the risk of staining:
Always place corten steel products slightly above ground level. You can use rubber feet, a galvanized plate, or a specially designed base. This prevents rust water from pooling underneath the item.
Place new products for several weeks on grass, gravel, or another permeable surface. Let them develop their first rust layer before placing them on tiles.
Treat your tiles with a water- and dirt-repellent sealer. This makes it harder for rust particles to adhere and easier to clean up.
For mailboxes, create a slight slope so that water doesn’t reach your driveway. A gutter or drainage channel also helps direct rust water away quickly.
Our corten steel planters and mailboxes are designed with drainage, base construction, and minimal contact with the ground in mind.
Already have rust stains on your tiles? Don’t panic. There are effective ways to remove them:
At hardware stores or online, you'll find oxalic acid-based products made for removing rust from stone surfaces. Follow the instructions carefully and always test on a discreet area first.
For light stains, make a paste from citric acid powder and water. Let it sit for a few minutes, brush gently, and rinse. White vinegar can also help, though it’s less potent than commercial options.
For tough stains, a pressure washer (optionally with hot water) can help. Note: some tiles are prone to erosion, so use a flat jet instead of a concentrated one.
After cleaning, you can still apply sealer to your tiles to prevent recurrence. Special anti-rust coatings are available for paving around corten steel.
“We first placed our corten steel planter directly on natural stone. Within a few weeks, rust rings appeared. Then we raised it on rubber feet — no more issues.”
“I use an oxalic acid-based rust remover. Works great on our concrete-look tiles!”
“Our corten steel mailbox now sits on a galvanized pedestal with drainage. Not a drop on the pavers!”
Although there’s a risk of staining, corten steel remains a popular material — and for good reason:
With a few precautions and proper advice, there’s no reason to avoid it. At Doika, we only offer high-quality products designed for both functionality and safety.
Corten steel on tiles can initially cause stains, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid using it. With thoughtful placement, protection, and maintenance, you can enjoy this beautiful material for years — without rust issues. And if stains do appear? Now you know exactly how to handle them.
