While there are no strict design requirements, your mailbox must not resemble public mailboxes (such as official postal service boxes) too closely. Additionally, the mailbox flap should not pose any safety hazards for mail carriers.
The placement of your mailbox also matters. It should be positioned as close to the public road as possible. If your home is set back from the street, a freestanding mailbox is required. However, it cannot be more than 10 meters from the road. Your mailbox must be clearly numbered with your house number, and mail carriers should not have to walk more than 2.5 meters off the road to deliver mail.
Height regulations also apply: the top of the mailbox should ideally be at a height of 1.1 meters. The letter slot must be large enough for standard mail and positioned between 0.6 and 1.8 meters above the ground.
