Letterbox legislation
The mandatory dimensions and placement of your letterbox
Dimensions
The slot must be at least 23 cm wide and 3 cm high. Make sure the slot is no higher than 3 centimeters, otherwise someone could mess around in your mailbox. Place the opening at a height between 70 and 170 cm. For apartment buildings with more than four mailboxes, this is between 40 and 180 cm. It is best to use a letterbox with a depth of 35 cm. A C4 format (32.4 cm by 22.9 cm with a thickness of 2.4 cm) fits in your letterbox without any problems.
You should pay attention to this when placing your letterbox:
You must place the mailbox on the edge of the public road. Apartment complexes with more than four mailboxes are an exception to this. Here, the mailboxes must be on the ground floor and easily accessible. The house numbers or bus numbers must always be visible and readable from public roads. It is not mandatory to put the names of the residents on the mailbox, but this is certainly recommended.
What happens if you are not in order?
If your mailbox is not in order, the postman will inform you. If there is a serious problem that you are not in order, you risk having mail delivery suspended. More information about dimensions, regulations and possible problems and how to solve them can be found on the Bpost and PostNL sites.
